Saving Money with Yogurt

It seriously is true!

Squooshi Reusable Food Pouch

My 2 kids love yogurt and I’ve never been one to hold back on the yummy stuff due to a family history of osteoporosis, but I have had a few little battles with getting my kids to eat this without spending a small fortune each week.

As much as I tried they would not eat yogurt from a bowl, no matter what colour or character was printed on it. This used to annoy me as I would buy a large tub of a family friendly yogurt and it would go to waste each week. So for the sake of dairy consumption and a healthy snack I gave in to the small supermarket pouches.

I was never really a fan of these for a number of reasons;
1. Cost – $1.50-$1.80 a pouch x 2 kids x sometimes 2 a day as they are only small = up to $6 a day…..times how many days that week they consumed
2. Shelf Life – seriously how long do they stay on the shelf compared to larger tubs of more family friendly yogurts………..?
3. Sugar Content – as a mother of 2 very active non sleeping kids, the sugar in these prepacked meals used to send my kids on a hyper spin. And it was noticeable!

So when I came across the Squooshi reusable food pouches I was in heaven! They are so cute with their range animal prints my kids absolutely loved them.

I started taste testing the larger tubs of yogurts and finally came across one that my kids loved the flavour and texture of (my eldest has a food phobia so this was a bit of trial and error). One tub of a very low in sugar and high in the good stuff only cost me $6.30 and would last us a whole week!! Plus I would reuse the tubs for craft things – post for another day.If I’m completely and utterly organised in a domestic super mum week I even make my own yogurt using my thermomix saving even more money!

How much money did we save?? Well doing the sums based on purchasing a large tub each week I was saving heaps.

How I worked this out based on 2 supermarket pouches per day 5 days a week for a year:
Cost $1.50 (average) x 2 kids x 2 per day x days per week = $30
Now a year this would cost $1,560 – (scary how quickly it adds up)

Buying a large tub at the average $6.50 per week already saving $23.50 per week off your grocery bill. But over a year this would cost you $338 saving $1,222 – WOW!

BUT if you made your own using a slow cooker, thermomix, easy-yo or any other way you would save even more!
