A Long Way Away, But Just a Fairy Door and Some Fairy Dust Between Us

This year I did what some may think is unfathomable, but to me was important as well as incredibly hard to do. I have never been away from my two young kids (4 & 2) for more than 20 hours and for the first time ever I was going to be not only away from them but also my hubby for 2weeks, yep 2 weeks!!! AND on the other side of the world in the UK!

My beautiful best friend was getting married to the most amazing guy and I was bestowed the honor of being her Matron of Honour. Something which I will certainly cherish forever as she was by my side for mine and now I was able to be by her side for hers. Unfortunately we could not all afford to fly over as a family so I headed off alone (and pretty much cried non stop the first leg of the flight) to help the bride celebrate her hens and pre-wedding final preparations.

Although we had arranged to talk every day via Skype, I had a feeling that as my kids are still quite young they may not completely understand why I was gone. I was worried that they may not think I loved them as I was not there with them sun up to sun down. So to help them (and myself) I created some little letters from me to my kids before I left that the fairies will leave by their fairy door.

Little Fairy Door - Letters from Home

At the end of each Skype chat before they headed off to bed, I held up a red envelope for them to see. I told them that I had a special letter which I was going to give to the fairies and they were going to fly it to them, and when then woke in the morning it will be by their fairy door.

Every 2nd night once the kids were asleep, my hubby put one of the letters I created by the door. Those mornings the kids came rushing in all excited holding up a little red envelope with a letter from me for him to read.

This apparently really helped them (and my hubby) and made a huge difference if they were feeling sad and missing me. My 2yr old daughter carried one around with her for a couple of days and my son had them lined up next to their bunk bed. I love our Little Fairy Door!

Although I was a long way away, there was just a bit of fairy dust between us
